Princeville, IL Area Information
Extraordinary, natural, cozy and historical all describe Princeville, IL. Princeville was settled by Daniel Prince in 1821. Though people had been trying to settle since the late 1600s, because of attacks, fights and disagreements between the settlers and local Native American tribes no one had been able to create a lasting home site. Amazingly, Daniel Prince became accepted as a friend of the Native Americans, despite the hard feelings created by earlier settlers. In fact, the Native Americans saved his life after a deadly rattlesnake bite and throughout the Black Hawk War Daniel Prince and his family were able to live unharmed in their area of Prince’s Grove, the present Princeville location, while other European Americans took refuge in the Fort at Peoria. Perhaps part of why the Native Americans befriended and loved Daniel Price was because he was a conservationist and naturalist. Price would burn grass early in the season to prevent massive prairie fires, plowed furrows and built his home on high ground close to the Illinois River making irrigation easy and flooding less of a danger.
Princeville residents are proud of their historical founding father, and carry on his eco-friendly conservation traditions in their everyday living, working and playing. Residents place a great deal of importance on the small town benefit of neighbors and friends who all maintain a strong sense of family and community.
Princeville is also proud to boast a friendly, safe, clean, diverse and growing community large enough to remain economically viable while providing its residents a modern infrastructure. Only 15 miles from Peoria and linked to I-74 and Highways 90 and 91, Princeville is also able to offer travel by railway. For great family fun, there are many options within short drives to Peoria and neighboring cities and many more right in Princeville, including Princeville Aquatic Center, Princeville Heritage Center, Cutter’s Grove Park, Stevens Square Park.
