You might be interested to know that in 1882, the Chief’s Johnny Clarkson threw the first curveball in baseball history! And catcher, Spike Twineham was the first player in the Midwest to throw out base runners attempting to steal second base. It’s safe to say, baseball is a tradition in Peoria.

We hold the IHSA Boy’s Basketball Tournament each year fondly known as “March Madness.” The interactive March Madness Experience takes place in the Carver Arena exhibition hall during the tournaments.

The Bradley Braves basketball team from Bradley University is a local favorite. The men's basketball team has made eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Braves made their first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 1955.

Catch the Classic Sports Festival in June where athletes from around the world compete in a wide variety of events including yacht racing, rowing, golf and more. The Steamboat Festival features an annual race between “The Spirit of Peoria” (a sternwheeler paddleboat) and the New Orleans-based “Delta Queen.” This race is the highlight event of the festival every year.
